Wind Energy in Kankakee County, Illinois

One of AcreTrader's early farm investments, a corn and soybean farm in Kankakee County, Illinois, produces clean energy with an on-site wind turbine. Installed in 2015, the turbine produces 1.7 megawatts of electricity per hour with essentially zero carbon emissions. Wind turbines are a great way for farms to maximize their space, as they require less than two acres, but offer huge returns, paying for themselves in terms of energy use within months of installation and generating significant energy payments for the landowner. The turbine on this property is part of the Pilot Hill Wind Project, operated by EDF Renewables in partnership with Microsoft, and connects directly to the energy grid that powers Microsoft data centers in Chicago.
